A gutter collects water from the roof and channels it to the downpipes, then to the drainage. When it leaks, comes loose or becomes blocked, the façade, the foundations and sometimes the interior of the building suffer the consequences. This page presents the trade, its stages and how to prepare a quote request in Western Switzerland.

Gutters, downpipes and sheet-metal work: what the trade covers

The roof drainage system has several components: the gutters along the roof edge, the brackets that support them, the vertical downpipes, the bends, the collector boxes, the connection stubs and sometimes leaf guards that catch leaves. The work sits on the border between sheet-metal work and roofing, and the same trade often handles both.

The most common jobs are:

  • installing gutters on a new building or an extension;
  • completely replacing a worn, rusted or deformed system;
  • one-off repair of a joint, a bracket or a punctured section;
  • replacing downpipes damaged by impact or frost;
  • cleaning and inspection before autumn;
  • adapting the gutters during a roof renovation or façade insulation.

The usual materials are zinc, copper, aluminium, pre-coated steel and PVC. Each has its advantages: durability, appearance, ease of installation, sensitivity to corrosion. The right choice depends on the building, its style and local constraints, particularly in older neighbourhoods.

When to call a professional for your gutters

Some signs deserve a check without delay:

  • damp patches or streaks on the façade, below the gutter;
  • gutters that overflow in the rain even though they are clean;
  • sections that tilt, come loose or let water stand;
  • rust, holes or open joints;
  • broken downpipes, which discharge water at the foot of the wall;
  • ice that forms and weighs down the system in winter.

Working at height is not trivial. Scaffolding, a lifting platform or fall protection are often necessary, and falls from a ladder are among the most serious household accidents. For anything beyond simple cleaning from the ground, it is safer to entrust the work to a properly equipped professional.

Timing matters too. A replacement is often coordinated with a façade renovation or a roof refurbishment: the scaffolding is already in place and the connections between roof and gutter are dealt with in one go.

Sheet-metal workers with a CFC and building rules: the Swiss framework

In Switzerland, the sheet-metal trade is learned through an apprenticeship leading to a Federal Certificate of Proficiency (CFC). Roofers also follow a recognised training. The CFC attests to basic training; it does not replace your own checks. Always ask who the company entrusts the work to, and whether work at height is carried out with suitable equipment.

Building rules are a matter for the cantons and municipalities. The question is not only technical: the appearance of a building, the colour of a material or the route of a downpipe on a façade visible from the street may concern the authorities. Before work that changes the appearance of the building, check with your municipality or the relevant cantonal department whether a permit is required. The rest of this page summarises the useful cantonal points of reference.

Gutters in Geneva, Vaud, Valais, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Jura and Biel/Bienne: what changes by canton

Geneva. Building permits are issued by the canton, through the Office des autorisations de construire (building permits office). The canton has many rental buildings managed by property agencies: it is often the agency that orders the work and receives the quote. The old town and protected neighbourhoods may impose requirements on the materials and appearance of gutters. On the energy side, the cantonal energy law (LEn) and the cantonal energy office (OCEN) oversee the Buildings Programme; if your gutters are part of a wider renovation, find out about subsidies before signing.

Vaud. The building permit is issued by the municipality. The file goes through the cantonal permit centre (CAMAC) when cantonal departments need to give an opinion. Old towns and the Lavaux vineyards, a World Heritage site, call for particular attention to the appearance of roofs and façades. The Vaud energy law and the cantonal energy directorate run a cantonal subsidy programme.

Valais. The building permit is issued by the municipality in the building zone, and by a cantonal commission outside the building zone. There are many chalets and second homes; in the municipalities concerned, the federal law on second homes may play a role. The cantonal energy and hydropower department runs a subsidy programme.

Fribourg. Building permit applications go through the cantonal FRIAC platform; the permit is issued by the prefecture or the municipality depending on the type of work. The canton is bilingual and its old towns are protected. The cantonal energy department runs a subsidy programme.

Neuchâtel. Applications go through the cantonal SATAC desk, and the decision is made by the municipality. The watchmaking heritage of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, listed by UNESCO, makes questions about the appearance of buildings particularly sensitive. The cantonal energy and environment department runs a subsidy programme.

Jura. The building permit is issued by the municipality or by the canton depending on the scale of the project. The old towns of Delémont, Porrentruy and Saint-Ursanne deserve a prior check. The cantonal energy section runs a subsidy programme.

Bern and Biel/Bienne. The permit is issued by the municipality or the prefecture depending on the project. Biel/Bienne is officially bilingual, French and German: forms and exchanges with the administration can be in either language. The cantonal office for the environment and energy runs a subsidy programme.

These points of reference are general. For your address, the municipality or the relevant cantonal department remains the authority that decides.

Preparing your quote request for gutters

A clear request means you receive comparable quotes. Gather the following:

  • the address and type of building (house, apartment block, outbuilding, garage);
  • the approximate length of the gutters and the number of downpipes, if you know it;
  • the current material and the one you would like, or your openness to advice;
  • accessibility: roof height, sloping ground, flat or pitched roof, nearby neighbours;
  • the nature of the problem: leak, rust, detachment, overflow, and don’t forget photos;
  • the context: roof renovation under way, façade renovation planned, listed building;
  • your status: owner, co-owner, tenant with the landlord’s agreement, or small business.

For a co-owned property, the decision is made at the meeting in line with the regulations; for a tenant, the agreement of the landlord or the agency is essential. State this in your request, as it avoids back-and-forth.

The sos-travaux.ch site passes your request on to tradespeople and companies in the region, who will contact you to prepare a free, no-obligation quote. To submit it, go to the request a quote page.

What a gutter quote details and what makes the cost vary

A reliable quote describes the work precisely. Check that it includes:

  • the material, the thickness or quality, the profile of the gutters and the colour;
  • the number and type of downpipes, bends and connectors;
  • the removal of the old system and waste disposal;
  • site protection, scaffolding or lifting platform, stating who supplies them;
  • any additional work: repairs to fascia boards, connections to the roof, connection to the stormwater drainage;
  • the payment terms, the proposed completion times and the validity period of the offer;
  • what is not included.

The cost depends on several factors that no general figure can sum up: the length to be fitted, the height of the building and the means of access, the material chosen, the complexity of the roof (dormers, valleys, corners), the condition of the substrate, the need to repair neighbouring timber or sheet-metal elements, and any requirements linked to a listed building. The same job can also cost less if it is combined with other work at height.

Compare quotes on the same scope. A large difference between two offers often comes from a forgotten item (scaffolding, waste disposal) rather than a real difference in price.

Five- and two-year periods: your rights after gutter work

The Code of Obligations (CO) governs defects in construction work. For work on a building, the period for claims is five years under art. 371 CO. Gutters fixed to a building normally form part of the work on the building. For movable property, the period is two years.

In practice:

  • check the work on handover, in the rain if possible;
  • report any defect in writing as soon as you notice it, attaching photos;
  • keep the quote, the invoice and the correspondence.

If the contract refers to it, the SIA 118 standard applies in addition. Read what your contract provides before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Does an overflowing gutter always need replacing?
No. Overflow is often caused by leaves or moss blocking the gutter, or by a poorly set slope. Cleaning it or readjusting the brackets is sometimes enough. A professional will assess it on site and tell you whether a repair or a replacement is justified.
Do I need a permit to change gutters?
For a simple like-for-like replacement, one is rarely needed, but it depends on the municipality and the canton. Changing the material, colour or shape on a listed building or in a neighbourhood with protected status may require a permit. Check with your municipality or the relevant cantonal department before ordering.
Who decides if I am a tenant?
Work on the building envelope is the responsibility of the owner or the property management agency. As a tenant, you can report the defect to your landlord in writing, but you cannot have the work carried out without their agreement. You can, however, submit a quote request if the landlord has entrusted this to you.
What should a gutter quote include?
It describes the material and profile of the gutters, the downpipes, the accessories, the removal of the old system, waste disposal and the scaffolding or lifting platform if needed. It also states what is not included. Comparing several quotes only makes sense if each one covers the same scope.
How long do I have to claim for a defect?
For work on a building, the Code of Obligations (CO) provides a five-year period under art. 371 CO; for movable property, it is two years. Report a defect in writing, without delay, as soon as it is noticed. If the contract refers to the SIA 118 standard, it applies in addition.
