Are you looking for a heat pump in Montreux, or an installer of heat pump heating on the Vaud Riviera? Between the shores of Lake Geneva and the villages above, a single municipality brings together very different situations: a lakeside apartment building, a villa on a hillside, a village house in Chernex. The choice of technology, the position of the unit and the procedures are not the same from one neighbourhood to another.
This page helps you place your project. It does not replace the opinion of a professional on site, nor the answer of the municipality.
Which heat pump technology for your Montreux neighbourhood?
There are three families: air-to-water, which draws heat from the outdoor air; ground-to-water, which uses geothermal probes; and water-to-water, which taps a groundwater source. In Montreux, the layout of the plot often matters more than a preference in principle.
- Air-to-water: the simplest to install, as it needs no drilling. It requires space for the outdoor unit and, often, an indoor unit or pipework inside the house.
- Ground-to-water: vertical boreholes are needed. It requires access for the drilling rig, which is far from obvious on a terraced plot or in a narrow lane, and a cantonal permit.
- Water-to-water: it depends on the presence of a water resource and remains subject to cantonal water protection rules.
A serious installer starts with a visit: they look at the boiler room, the type of heat distribution (radiators or underfloor heating), the insulation and the outdoor space before proposing anything.
Hillside villas, lakeside buildings: two approaches in Montreux
Montreux’s buildings are contrasted. Neighbourhoods rise up the slopes, from the lakeside to Glion and Caux, passing through Chernex. This leads to very different projects.
Villa or detached house on the slopes
On a sloping plot, the question is first a practical one: where to place the outdoor unit of an air-to-water pump? A terrace, a low wall or one side of the house may suit, but the neighbour below, or next door, may hear more than you do. On a hillside, sound travels along the line of the slope and the neighbouring plot is sometimes very close. This matters for meeting the OPB noise limits.
For a geothermal probe, site access and the slope of the plot come into play. The installer or drilling company can say what is technically feasible; the permit, however, comes from the canton.
Rental building or joint ownership in town
In a building in the centre, the central boiler room is often in the basement. Replacing a boiler with a heat pump then means finding space for the unit, sometimes an access route to bring it in, and deciding who bears what. A joint-ownership property must follow its internal rules: a decision by the owners’ meeting, cost sharing, possibly a renovation fund. For a landlord, the question is different but the step is the same: a detailed quote is the basis for the decision.
Village house in the upper areas
In Glion, Caux or Chernex, there are older houses, sometimes poorly insulated, with high-temperature radiator heating. A heat pump works all the better there when the building envelope is in good condition. An installer may recommend checking the insulation first or replacing some radiators. This is not a forced sale: it is what determines the efficiency of the system.
Winter at altitude, lakeside and vineyards: what the location changes for the installation
Montreux lies on Lake Geneva, with a mild climate on the shores, but the villages above experience a different winter, with snow. The installer must take this into account:
- the position of the outdoor unit, which must not end up buried under snow or exposed to ice falling from a roof;
- the sizing of the unit, which depends on the house, its insulation and the temperature it requires in cold periods;
- the connection and frost protection of outdoor pipes.
At the lakeside, air humidity and spray are not the main issue; however, the proximity of the shores and of busy public spaces calls for care over the appearance of the installation.
Part of the Vaud territory is protected, notably the old towns and the Lavaux vineyards listed as a World Heritage site. If your property is in a protected area or near a listed site, requirements on external appearance may be stricter: a unit visible from the street or the landscape may be a problem. Ask the municipality whether your plot is affected, and assume nothing.
Permit, neighbours and owner: the procedures in Montreux
In the canton of Vaud, the building permit is issued by the municipality. When State services need to give an opinion, the file goes through the cantonal permit centre (CAMAC). In energy matters, the Vaud energy law applies, and the cantonal energy directorate runs the canton’s subsidy programme.
In practice, here are the points to check before placing an order:
- The outdoor unit: an air-to-water pump must comply with the OPB noise limits, and may require a building permit depending on the municipality. Put the question to the Montreux municipal administration with a photo of the planned location.
- The geothermal probe: it requires a cantonal permit for groundwater protection, and is not allowed everywhere. Do not sign anything committing you to drilling before you have that answer.
- The landlord or joint ownership: if you rent, nothing can be done without the owner’s agreement. In joint ownership, the decision rests with the owners’ meeting.
- Subsidies: they go through cantonal programmes, including the Buildings Programme. The filing conditions (before or after the works) should be checked before any signature.
How to prepare your quote request and compare offers
The more precise the request, the more comparable the quotes. Describe:
- the type of property (villa, apartment building, village house), its neighbourhood and its access;
- the current system: oil, gas, electricity, approximate age of the boiler;
- the heat distribution: radiators, underfloor heating, or both;
- the space available outside and in the boiler room, and the distance to the nearest neighbour;
- your status: owner, joint owner, tenant with the landlord’s agreement.
A good quote itemises each item: supply of the unit, outdoor unit or drilling, hydraulic and electrical connections, removal of the old installation, commissioning, and, if planned, the administrative procedures. It states what is included and what is not.
The cost varies with the technology chosen (drilling does not cost the same as an outdoor unit), the power required, the condition of the existing installation, site access and any additional work. A job on a steeply sloping plot or in a narrow lane takes more organisation. Rather than comparing a single figure, compare what each offer includes.
To receive proposals from companies in the region, you can request a quote: the service is free and without obligation, and you remain free to choose or not.
