Are you looking for a heat pump in Nyon to replace a boiler or to heat your home differently? Installing a heat pump heating system on the shores of Lake Geneva, between Geneva and Lausanne, is not the same as doing so in the mountains or in a new housing estate. This page sets out what the location changes for this type of project, the steps to plan for and how to compare offers.
The most common heat pumps in Nyon
There are three families of machines, and they do not all suit the same plot.
- The air-to-water heat pump draws heat from the outside air. It is the solution that needs the least groundwork: an outdoor unit (sometimes an indoor unit, depending on the model), hydraulic connections and an electrical connection.
- The ground-to-water heat pump uses one or more geothermal probes drilled into the ground. It needs drilling and a cantonal permit, but it has no outdoor fan.
- The water-to-water heat pump draws from a groundwater table. It falls under the same permit logic, because it involves groundwater.
In Nyon, the choice is decided first by the space available and by the neighbours. A house with a garden makes all three options conceivable on paper. A home squeezed between two buildings, or a block with a small courtyard, often leaves fewer.
Heating a town born under the Romans: old town, castle and buildings to treat with care
Nyon was founded by the Romans, and its castle and old town overlook the harbour from a hill. This setting is more than a postcard: it weighs on heating work.
Within the old town, an outdoor unit placed on a façade or a balcony is visible from the street and from neighbouring lanes. Old towns are among the sites that the canton of Vaud seeks to protect, and the municipality examines projects there more closely than elsewhere. Without presuming the answer, it is wise to ask the question before ordering the machine: the external appearance, the colour of the casing and its location may be part of the discussion.
Older buildings also raise a technical question. Thick stone walls, period windows, older-generation radiators: the water flow temperature your installation will have to supply depends on the building envelope. A serious company does not propose a model without having examined the condition of the building, the type of heat distribution (radiators or underfloor heating) and the home’s real needs.
If your property is listed in an inventory or located near the castle, say so in your very first request. This avoids a quote drawn up on wrong assumptions.
Lakeshore and hillsides: what the terrain means for your installation
The canton of Vaud ranges from the lakeshore, where the climate is mild and the hillsides sloping, to the Jura and the Vaud Alps, where snow settles in. Nyon lies on the lake side. For a heat pump, the relative mildness of the shores of Lake Geneva is rather favourable to a machine that draws on the outside air. This does not remove the need to size the appliance properly: a cold day is still a cold day, and the output must be calculated on the building’s needs, not on an average.
Hillsides, for their part, change the installation. On sloping ground:
- the outdoor unit needs a stable base and a clear location, away from a wall that would reflect the noise;
- access for a drilling rig, if you are considering a probe, can be more complicated;
- the drainage of condensate and the removal of rainwater need to be anticipated.
The lakeshore also calls for thought about the water table and groundwater: the closer a plot is to the water, the more closely the cantonal authority looks at a drilling or an abstraction. That is precisely why the geothermal probe is not allowed everywhere.
House, rental block or co-ownership: who decides, who pays
In Nyon as elsewhere, the project is not the same depending on the status of the home.
Owner of a detached house. You decide alone, within the rules of the municipality and the canton. You generally have more latitude over the location of the unit or the drilling.
Co-owner of an apartment. The shared heating belongs to the common parts. Replacing the system therefore goes through the owners’ meeting, which must vote on the project and its financing. Prepare a clear file: condition of the current boiler, objective, compared quotes.
Tenant. You do not decide on the building’s heating system. If you would like it to change, it is the landlord or the property manager you need to convince. Without their agreement, no installation is possible.
Landlord or property manager. Work in a rental building affects several homes; access to technical rooms, the heating shutdown during the works and informing the occupants all need to be organised.
Permits, neighbours and subsidies in the canton of Vaud
Several rules apply, and they depend on the type of heat pump.
- Outdoor air-to-water heat pump: it must meet the noise limits of the Noise Abatement Ordinance (OPB) and may require a building permit depending on the municipality. In the canton of Vaud, the building permit is issued by the municipality; when cantonal departments must give an opinion, the file goes through the cantonal permit centre (CAMAC).
- Geothermal probe or abstraction from the water table: a cantonal permit is required, under groundwater protection, and the solution is not open across the whole territory.
- Energy: heating is governed by the Vaud energy law, applied by the cantonal energy department.
- Subsidies: aid may be available through cantonal programmes (Buildings Programme) and through the canton’s subsidy programme. Their conditions and timetable change; check them before signing a quote.
To find out precisely what applies to your plot, contact the building department of the municipality of Nyon and, for groundwater or energy, the competent cantonal department. The company drawing up the quote can help you, but confirmation comes from the authority.
Preparing your request and comparing heat pump quotes in Nyon
A well-described request receives comparable offers. Gather the following before submitting it:
- the type of home (house, apartment, block) and its approximate year of construction;
- the current heating system (oil, gas, electric, other) and the condition of the boiler;
- how the heat is distributed: radiators, underfloor heating;
- the space available around the building: garden, courtyard, technical room, access for a lorry or a drilling rig;
- the situation with regard to the neighbours: distance to neighbouring windows, sloping ground;
- photos of the boiler room and of the location planned for the outdoor unit.
A good quote details:
- the type of heat pump and its output, with the justification for the sizing;
- what is included: removal of the old boiler, hot water cylinder, hydraulic and electrical connections, commissioning;
- ancillary work: base, drilling, drainage, making good;
- the administrative steps handled by the company, for example the permit application or the subsidy request, and those that remain your responsibility;
- the stated noise level of the outdoor unit.
The cost varies first with the type of machine (a geothermal probe is not the same job as an air-to-water unit), then with the size of the building, the condition of the existing heating system, access to the site and the scope of the work. Comparing several offers helps you see these differences; avoid comparing only the total without looking at what it covers.
To get started, you can request a quote: describe your home and your project, and your request is passed to craftspeople and companies in the region, who will contact you to prepare a free, no-obligation quote.
